The Oatery story

As my sister often tells people, I have always had a strange affinity with porridge. Throughout university, I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and still look forward to it for my next meal. To me, porridge is a blank canvas that hasn’t been entirely explored yet which I guess is part of the appeal - you can get weird and creative with it, but it will still be comforting no matter the topping.

The idea sparked when I was traveling through Europe and a friend took me to a porridge café. I remember having that ‘aha’ moment and knew straight away I wanted to bring the concept back to New Zealand.

So here we are, four years on from that visit, having started The Oatery.

Over the past four years we have grown a lot- from a gazebo at Thorndon market, to our beloved caravan at the Harbourside market and as of December 2021 we now have our own shop and commercial kitchen at 14 Left Bank, Cuba street.

The Oatery follows the ethos that people shouldn't have to choose between nutrition vs flavour, which is why our menu is driven by the seasons, our ingredients are sourced mindfully and our recipes are created with nutrition, flavour and YOU in mind.

Please come and visit us! We would love to see you.
